Spotify and Falkor Remind Us Love for Old Soundtracks is Never Ending #TBT

Remember when you cried because Atreyu couldn’t save Artax from drowning in the Swamp of Sadness? And Gmork haunted your nightmares with his sharp, drooly fangs? Well, Spotify is throwing it back to the good ol’ days of Luck Dragons and Oracles to prove that The NeverEnding Story really never ends, and neither does the quest for old songs. Turns out, Limahl’s song “Never Ending Story” is still streamed at least once every day somewhere in the world. In a nutshell, love for ‘80s music is forever.

The :30 Weiden+Kennedy spot stars Falkor the Luck Dragon and Noah Hathaway as Atreyu, the actor who originally starred in the ‘80s cult classic film. Alan Oppenheimer also lends his voice to Falkor like he did in 1984. Under the direction of Anonymous Content’s Tim Godsall, Falkor and Atreyu fly above the clouds once more—and can’t believe that there’s still at least one nostalgic fool listening to the NeverEnding Story soundtrack.

Other spots in the campaign highlight Flo Rida’s “My House” as an anthem for all the Americans moving to Canada in November along with a church full of nuns head-bobbing to Pope Francis’ rock album. If that doesn’t make you download the Spotify App, we don’t know what will.

These digital and out-of-home ads run on TV, online, and in the cinema. The goal is to send Spotify and non-Spotify users to free playlists: NeverEnding80s.com, MovingUptoCanada.com, and RockingNuns.com.

The message W+K New York is sharing is simple: it’s sharing. Spotify isn’t just about the music, it’s about the social experience Spotify creates. Spotify wants you to know, that if you’re not a user, you’re missing out on the fun, and on sharing gems like “Never Ending Story”—because people’s love for ‘80s music is never ending!
