“Abortion. Yeah, We Do That” #BaconBits

In 1996, President Bill Clinton stated that “abortion should not only be safe and legal, it should be rare.” Flash forward to 2015, nearly 1 in 3 women will have an abortion in her lifetime. While abortion remains one of the most heated debates in American society, a couple Boulder agencies are helping their client to mainstream abortion by making it common speak. They just released this video on behalf of their client CARAFEM:

“Today marks the start of a change in the conversation about abortion. While carafem will provide accessible abortion and support to women in need, the brand is positioned to question our social norms by openly using the word abortion,” says Fleetwood Mathews, Creative Director.

Abortion - Carafem

Since its release, the video has racked up views and sparked conversations–ranging from sarcastic to wholehearted, heated to supportive. Mathews elaborates, “The reason carafem is leading with the word “abortion” is because carafem seeks to reclaim the word, remove the stigma, and reposition it as the common experience it is for many women. By utilizing the word in a more conversational tone, carafem will deflate negativity and increase awareness of something that is, and has been, common in our society. In fact, 1 in 3 women will choose to have an abortion during her reproductive lifetime. This statistic offers cultural validation for a new conversation and highlights the importance of access to quality abortion health care.”
